Frequently asked questions

macOS says it cannot verify Foluna. How do I open it?

Foluna is free and is not notarised by Apple, so macOS asks for your confirmation the first time:

  1. Open the downloaded disk image and drag Foluna to the Applications folder.
  2. Open Foluna. When macOS refuses, click Done.
  3. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway next to the message about Foluna.
  4. Confirm with your password. You only need to do this once.
Which Macs are supported?

A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) running macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Which e-readers work with Foluna?

Kindle over USB, both older models that show up as a disk and models from late 2024 onwards that use MTP. Kobo, recognised automatically. Any other USB e-reader that reads EPUB (PocketBook, Tolino…): add it once in Settings › E-Readers, with the folder where its books go.

Which file formats are supported?

EPUB, MOBI, AZW3, AZW and PDF. For the Kindle, EPUB files are converted to AZW3 automatically. For the Kobo, MOBI and AZW3 are converted to EPUB. Foluna can also convert MOBI and AZW3 to EPUB on the Mac.

Does Foluna modify my book files?

No. Foluna reads your folders and never changes the original files. Your corrections (title, author, cover…) are applied to the copies sent to the e-reader.

Can Foluna open books protected by DRM?

No. Foluna does not remove DRM. Books protected by DRM are ignored in the online catalogues and cannot be converted or read in the app.

Do I need Calibre or an account?

No. Foluna works on its own and needs no account.

Where is my data stored?

On your Mac, in ~/Library/Application Support/Alexandrie/. Settings can also make a daily backup to iCloud Drive or an external disk.

How do I update Foluna?

Foluna checks for new versions and offers to install them. The update is installed when you quit the app. You can also check with Foluna › Check for Updates…, or download the latest version from this site.

Is Foluna really free?

Yes. Foluna is free software under the MIT licence: no purchase, no subscription, no advertising.
